Kitesurf Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara is a lively, touristic, colorful and magical village build on the dunes, all the roads and sidewalks are sand. Jericoacoara is 300km of Cumbuco, and driving is 3.5h.

Jericoacoara is fun, party with super strong wind. Locals kite surf in Jericoacoara village, but for better kitesurf conditions, you need to travel around to Prea, Guriu and other kite spots.

Jericoacoara and Prea, has the strongest wind, and the longest season in Ceara, and all Brazil. The best months are August to January, when the wind blows strongly all day, almost every day, at around 28-34 knots. In July and February, you can get still get many (50% - 60%) great kitesurfing days,  with good wind. Wind direction is side-on in Prea, side-off in Jericoacoara and side in Guriu and Tatajuba.

Kite Spots Jericoacoara

 In Jericoacoara there are many kite spots around, kitesurfing downwind trips and inland lagoon to kiteboard inside.

Kitesurf in Jeri

Wind in Jeri itself,  in strong and gusty, and blows mainly side-offshore. Locals kite surf in Jericoacoara village, but its only suitable experienced kitesurfer. Kite option in Jericoacoara:

  • For extreme kitesurfing conditions, you can go upwind, where the waves break in front of the rocks. Windsurfers ride here. Be careful, no rescue.
  • Downwind from Jericoacoara village, there is a seasonal, flat shallow tidal lagoon. You can get there with buggy, or downwind.

Prea kite village

The main kite surfing scene of Jericoacoara is in Prea that has wide sandy beach and side-onshore wind. Kite schools and hotels in Prea, organize daily shuttles from Prea to Jericoacoara.

Guriú Kite Spot

Nice kite spot 10km downwind from Jericoacoara. Wind direction is side shore to side onshore. Flat water in the river mouth at low to high tide. On low tide, you can find wind waves in the ocean. For better kite conditions, launch your kite in Jericoacoara, and head straight downwind towards Rio Guriú.

The first part is better run straight through, its mainly challenging, and not much fun. The wind is strong and very gusty. The wind gets more constant and turn more onshore, in the second half of the downwind, around the end of the bay.

Budget Kitesurfer Tip !

If you don't have a ride, mind that all 4x4 vehicles, cross Rio Guriú at the raft point. So you can catch there a ride back to Jericoacoara.  

Tatajuba Kite Spot

Tatajuba kite spot is another 10km downwind from Guriu river. This spot is in the river Tatajuba's delta. Flat water inside the river, and small wind waves on the beach. Wind is strong and might be gusty. The spot is reachable with 4x4 but driving is tide dependent, and guide or a driver, is recommend. In Tatajuba you can find kite hotel, on the other side of the river.

Kiteboarding Trips Jericoacoara

Great kiteboarding experience, is to take 4x4 trips to the beautiful kite lagoons. Nature lovers will enjoy the wild nature, mangroves and dunes. Most kite school organize kite trips with buggy or 4x4 vehicle. There are many beautiful lagoons, tatajuba lagoon, paraiso lagoon, torta lagoon and more. Wind in the lagoons inland is very gusty, so its mainly a trip adventure.

More Downwind Kitesurfing

From Guriu to Camocim, its a long downwind of around 30 km. The wind is strong and gusty. Water conditions are flat to choppy with small wind waves. Driving by the beach, is possible at low tide. Camocim has the strongest wind in north Brazil. Water is flat at all tides, mind the weak current from the river out.

You can continue kitesurfing downwind from Tatajuba to Camocim. The to Barra Grande and even Atins. This is a great kite trip, that should be done with reliable organizer.
